Tanah Lot Temple is located in Braban Village, Kediri District, Tabanan Regency. The temple itself stands majestically on a massive black rock formation overlooking the Indian Ocean. The name “Tanah Lot” comes from two Balinese words: Tanah, meaning land or reef resembling an island, and Lot (or Lod), meaning sea. Therefore, Tanah Lot means a small island floating in the sea.
This sacred site has been used as a place of worship since the Megalithic period, as evidenced by the presence of ancient menhirs. The temple structure was built on an uneven coral reef platform with a flat courtyard serving as the main sanctuary (jeroan). Tanah Lot is one of Bali’s most iconic sea temples, offering breathtaking sunset views and deep spiritual significance.
